If you have a mesh you want to tweak the colour of without making a whole new texture, vertex colours could be the answer. These allow you to take a neutral colour and tweak it within the mesh itself to be all sorts of different colours. Vertex colours also allow you to add additional detail to meshes such as dirt on rugs without having to mess with the texture itself, providing compatibility.
